Flamin Hot Cheetos Chicken Wings (Crispy & Spicy)
These are the wings to make when the goal is maximum crunch and a little bit of heat. Crushed Flamin Hot Cheetos become the coating here, pressed onto chicken that's already been seasoned and fried until crisp, then finished in a hot oven so every piece comes out cooked through and craggy. A quick dip in hot sauce does double duty: it adds flavor and acts as the glue that holds all those red-hot crumbs in place. Quick and easy, with only about 17 to 19 minutes of cook time.
If you steal one thing from this video, make it the hot sauce dip. Cheeto crumbs won't cling to fried chicken on their own, so once the wings come out of the oil, each one gets dipped in hot sauce on both sides — that dip is what lets the crumbs grab on and hold. The cook happens in two stages: about 7 minutes in the fryer, then a 450°F oven to finish the wings through and crisp everything up.
This one's for the game-day table — for anybody who likes their finger food a little playful. Every time I put out something crunchy and coated, the comments come back with new riffs on it, and this coating is wide open to them.

The recipe
Flamin Hot Cheetos Chicken Wings (Crispy & Spicy)
Ingredients
- chicken wings, washed and patted dry
- lime, for washing the chicken (to taste)
- salt, to taste
- black pepper, to taste
- chili lime seasoning, to taste
- cornstarch, to taste
- vinegar, a splash
- olive oil, a splash
- Flamin Hot Cheetos, crushed into crumbs
- hot sauce, to taste (used to bind the Cheeto coating)
How to Make It
- Wash the wings with a little lime, then pat them dry really well so the seasonings don't turn into a soup.
- Season the wings with salt and black pepper.
- Add chili lime seasoning, going light since it is salty and the Cheetos add seasoning of their own.
- Add cornstarch to help the wings crisp up when fried.
- Add a splash of vinegar and olive oil to bring the seasoning together.
- Fold the wings back so they hold their shape.
- Crush the Flamin Hot Cheetos into crumbs using a food processor, blender, or by smashing them by hand.
- Fry the wings for about 7 minutes; they will not be fully cooked at this stage.
- Dip each wing in hot sauce on both sides so it can act as a binding agent.
- Coat each wing fully in the Cheeto crumbs, using tongs since the coating is very sticky.
- Arrange the coated wings on a tray.
- Bake at 450°F for about 10 to 12 minutes, until crispy and cooked through.
Curtis's Tips
- Wash the wings with lime and pat them dry well so the seasoning stays put instead of turning watery.
- Chili lime seasoning is salty, so go light — the Cheetos bring plenty of seasoning along too.
- A little cornstarch in the seasoning is the trick for a crispier fry.
- Any chips will work, but Flamin Hot Cheetos are a can't-miss choice.
- Crush the Cheetos in a food processor or blender, or just smash them up by hand.
- The hot sauce works as a binding agent so the crumbs grip the chicken.
- The coating gets very sticky, so use tongs instead of your hands and coat each side fully.
- The 7-minute fry only crisps the outside; the oven finishes cooking the wings through.
Why this works
Dry skin is where the crunch starts: after the lime wash, the wings get patted dry really well, because wet chicken turns the seasonings into a soup instead of a crust. Cornstarch is the little trick that makes the skin fry up crispier, and a splash of vinegar and olive oil brings the whole seasoning layer together. I also go light on the chili lime on purpose — it's very salty, and the Cheetos arrive wearing a full coat of their own seasoning, so these wings get salted twice by the time they're done.
FAQ
Are the wings done after the 7-minute fry?
No — after frying they're not fully cooked yet, so don't sneak one. The 450°F bake, about 10 to 12 minutes, is what cooks them through and gets them crispy.
Do I have to use Flamin Hot Cheetos?
No — use whatever chips you choose, though I'll stand by the video on this one: Flamin Hot Cheetos can't go wrong. Break whatever you pick into crumbs with a food processor, a blender, or by smashing them up.
How much chili lime seasoning should I add?
I never pin down a precise measurement for this on camera, so here's the gauge I use: go light. That seasoning is very salty on its own, and the Cheeto crumbs are about to add a whole second layer on top.
What is the hot sauce actually doing?
It's the binding agent — the dip that makes the Cheeto crumbs stick to the fried chicken. Hit both sides, then coat each wing fully. The coating gets very sticky, so use tongs instead of your hands.
